Republican Winter Sports Training Base in the City of Shchuchinsk – Phase III
SPORT FACILITIES & LEISURE CENTERS
Total area of buildings and structures: 84,556.1 m²
Phase III includes:
- Four training ski jumping hills
- Boarding school for 300 pupils, including dormitories for students and staff
- Indoor ice rink with sports and fitness halls
- Hotel with 252 rooms
The aim of the construction is to provide a training facility for the development of promising junior athletes in 11 winter Olympic sports: cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, biathlon, alpine skiing, freestyle acrobatics, freestyle moguls, ski jumping, speed skating, short track, snowboarding, and figure skating. The complex will also host international competitions for children, juniors, and young athletes.
The Training Centre with Ski Jumps includes small and medium hills: HS11, HS22, HS44, and HS66 (10 m, 20 m, 40 m, and 65 m respectively).
- The HS65 ski jump tower is 57 m high.
- The HS44 ski jump tower is 11.82 m high.
- Judges’ towers for K40 and K65 are 17.58 m high.
- Judging platforms for K11 and K22.
- Additional facilities include a press centre, spectator stands, doping control areas, and other support buildings.
The Specialised Boarding School-College for 300 pupils is designed to educate gifted sports children from Year 7 to Year 11 and comprises three separate blocks:
- Academic block with auxiliary and sanitary facilities
- Sports and administrative block
- Dormitory block for 350 pupils, including medical and sanitary facilities
This is a highly complex project from a technological standpoint due to the integration of various functions within a single facility: academic classrooms, residential accommodation, sports halls, medical offices, and dining areas. Meeting strict urban planning regulations for boarding schools required an unconventional architectural solution to combine a variety of spaces with different purposes into a single architectural ensemble.
The main architectural feature is the unique combination of volumes. Despite differing heights and shapes, the building appears as a unified and cohesive composition. The various volumes are distinguished not only by colour but also by the use of different construction materials.

Project location
The building’s exterior is visually striking and stands out as a landmark within the sports complex. Despite its unusual appearance, the layout is extremely functional for the education and development of athletes. The large building area accommodates classrooms, administrative and auxiliary spaces, and leisure zones.
The indoor ice rink is intended for figure skating training, ice hockey matches, and public recreational skating throughout the year. The rink accommodates up to 50 skaters at once, with seating for 530 spectators.
The 252-room hotel
The architectural form of the hotel reflects that of ski jumps, supporting the overall concept of the project and its purpose as a training centre for ski jumping athletes. At the same time, upon extended viewing, the shape also resembles sails, symbolising both the direction and location of the facility in one of the country’s most developed tourist regions.
During the design of the hotel, special attention was paid to environmental sustainability, incorporating green building principles and energy efficiency, with the goal of achieving LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
